Small Magnets

Description:
We supply a wide range of magnets that are used for a great variety of applications. The three main materials are: alnico, ferrite (ceramic strontium ferrite) and rare earth (neodymium iron boron).
Please note that we only supply to industry.

Alnico Magnets

These are cast magnets manufactured from aluminum, nickel and cobalt. They possess excellent corrosion and heat resistant qualities up to 500°C.

Typical applications include:

  • "Pot" magnets for holding and clamping
  • Lifting
  • Proximity switches
  • High temperature fixture

Ferrite Magnets

emf-Ceramic (ferrite) magnets are composed of strontium carbonate and iron oxide usually die pressed and sintered. Due to good machining properties, we can cut and magnetize them to virtually any size or shape required. Due to their high coercivity and low cost, they are used in a wide range of applications. We also stock a wide range of blocks, rings and discs. Stable up to a maximum temperature of 120°C. They are charcoal gray in color and usually appear in the forms of discs, rings, blocks, cylinders, and sometimes arcs for motors

Applications of Ceramic Magnets

  • Speaker magnets
  • DC brush less motors
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Magnetos used on lawnmowers and outboard motors
  • DC permanent magnet motors (used in cars)
  • Separators (separate ferrous material from non-ferrous)
  • Used in magnetic assemblies designed for lifting, holding, retrieving and separating

Attributes of Ceramic Material

  • Least expensive material compared to alnico and rare earth magnets
  • High intrinsic coercive force
  • Available in simple shapes only due to manufacturing process
  • Lower service temperature than alnico, greater than rare earth
  • Finishing requires diamond cutting or grinding wheel
  • Lower energy product than alnico and rare earth magnets
  • Most common grades of ceramic are 1, 5 and 8 (1-8 possible)
  • Grade 8 is the strongest ceramic material available
  • Tooling can be expensive

Rare Earth Magnets

Emf-Neodymium magnets (Nd-Fe-B) are composed of neodymium, iron, boron and a few transition metals. They possess the most powerful magnetic properties in relation to volume and can lift up to 1000 times their own weight. However they do not possess strong heat resistant qualities usually remaining stable up to 80°C although SH grades of the compound are available which are stable up to 200°C. For higher temperature applications, rare earth samarium cobalt is recommended. Also due to their corrosive nature, neodymium is usually supplied coated.

Typical applications include:

  • Magnetic separators
  • Magnetic assemblies
  • Magnetic couplings
  • Magnetic drives
  • Holding and clamping
  • Magnetic therapy

Attributes of Neodymium Material

  • Very high resistance to demagnetization
  • High energy for size
  • Good in ambient temperature
  • Moderately priced
  • Material is corrosive and should be coated for long term maximum energy output

We can also manufacture small block magnets to customer requirements.
